Business Casual for Women: A Simple Guide
Business casual is the most common office dress code in America, and also the most confusing. It sits somewhere between a full suit and weekend clothes, and the line moves from one workplace to the next. The good news: with a handful of well-chosen pieces, you can look polished every day without overthinking it.
What business casual means today
Business casual means professional, but relaxed. Think tailored pieces worn in a softer way: a blazer without the matching pants, dress pants with a knit instead of a crisp shirt, or a simple dress with flat shoes. The goal is to look capable and put together, while feeling comfortable enough for a full day at your desk, in meetings or on your feet.
Every workplace is a little different. A law office or bank may lean toward the formal end, while a school or nonprofit may be more relaxed. When in doubt, look at what the leaders in your workplace wear, and dress one small step up.
5 pieces every closet needs
- A blazer. The single piece that turns any outfit into a work outfit. Start with a neutral like navy, black, camel or gray. Shop blazers
- Dress pants. A straight or wide leg cut in a wrinkle-resistant fabric, with a comfortable waistband. Shop dress pants
- A pencil skirt. Modest in length, with a little stretch so you can sit and walk easily. Shop pencil skirts
- A work blouse. A soft, easy-care blouse in ivory or white, plus one or two in a print or color you love. Shop work blouses
- A sheath dress. One piece, instantly polished, and easy to layer under your blazer. Shop sheath dresses
Choose these pieces in colors that work together, and you'll have more than a dozen outfits from five items.
3 outfit formulas
1. Blazer + blouse + dress pants
The classic. A tailored blazer over a soft blouse, with dress pants in a coordinating neutral. It works for meetings, presentations and first days. For a lighter look, swap the blazer for a fine knit cardigan.

2. Knit or blouse + pencil skirt
Feminine and polished. Tuck a blouse or a fitted knit into a pencil skirt, and add a belt if you like. Finish with closed-toe flats or a modest heel.
3. Sheath dress + blazer
The easiest outfit of the week. A sheath dress on its own is office-ready; add a blazer for meetings or cooler days. It goes straight from the office to dinner.
What to avoid
- Wrinkled fabrics. Even a beautiful piece looks careless when it's creased. Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics, or keep a steamer at home.
- Casual denim. Some offices allow dark jeans on Fridays, but at most workplaces denim is still too casual for business casual.
- Ill-fitting jackets. A blazer that pulls across the back or bust looks uncomfortable. When you're between sizes, size up in jackets.
- Very short or very tight cuts. Comfort and ease of movement always look more professional.
- Athletic wear and flip-flops. Keep them for the weekend.
Business casual for interviews
For a job interview, dress one level above the company's everyday dress code. If the office is business casual, a suit or a blazer with matching dress pants is a safe choice, and a sheath dress with a blazer works just as well. Choose solid colors like navy, black or gray, a simple blouse, and shoes you can walk in comfortably. Try your full outfit on a few days ahead, so you can walk in focused on the conversation, not your clothes.
